Research has shown that vacations are like therapy. They have mental, physical, and emotional benefits. And much like springtime, vacations offer renewal. They immerse us in unique experiences and leave us feeling rejuvenated.

Reap the rewards with a vacation in Texas, where you can breathe deep, admire new life blooming across the landscape, and create cherished memories that last a lifetime.

San Antonio and the surrounding Texas Hill Country offer visitors an enticing mix of cultural attractions, world-class dining, family-friendly parks, and natural beauty*. Head downtown to see fabled sites like the Alamo and the River Walk, explore the shopping and culinary scene at the Pearl, or venture deeper into the gorgeous countryside for blooming wildflowers, wine tasting, and even a traditional German-style community.

Top Downtown To-Dos

Downtown is home to many of San Antonio's most iconic attractions and historical sites, like the Alamo, the San Fernando Cathedral, and the San Antonio Museum of Art. River Walk winds along the San Antonio River, one story below street level, and links most of these attractions. The five-mile-long central section of River Walk brims with restaurants, shops, and bars, with colorful barges ferrying tourists up and down the river.

Market Square offers more than 100 locally owned shops and stalls selling food, folk art, handmade goods, and clothing. Brightly colored papel picado (tissue paper), the sound of mariachis, and the intoxicating smell of Tex-Mex cuisine all contribute to the festive atmosphere.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, south of downtown, connects five Spanish colonial mission sites along the eight-mile-long Mission Reach trail: Concepcion, San Juan, San Jose, and Espada.

The Pearl Paradise

A San Antonio institution since 1883, Pearl Brewery is now a mixed-use attraction that features several lauded restaurants and the San Antonio campus of the Culinary Institute of America. You'll also find some of the city's top local boutiques, bakeries, bars, and coffee shops there. On weekends, you can stroll the bustling Pearl Farmers Market, which features farmers and food purveyors on Saturdays and craftspeople and artisans on Sundays.

Family-Friendly Fun

Families with kids will appreciate the abundance of child-friendly activities in the area. Natural Bridge Caverns encompasses a series of paths through two distinct cave systems where you can see formations created by running and dripping water. Above ground, activities include gem mining and an obstacle course. Meanwhile, kids and adults alike will love spending the day at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, a popular theme park with a range of rollercoasters and rides, as well as live entertainment.

Hill Country Happenings

A drive through Hill Country reveals cypress-lined creeks and rivers, golden-hued hills, and – in the springtime – fields of vibrant wildflowers that will take your breath away. The abundance of vineyards and lavender farms has drawn comparisons to Napa and Provence. Make time to sample local wines from Bending Branch Winery, Fall Creek Vineyards, or Driftwood Estate, beloved for their quality wines and scenic properties.

Many Hill Country towns retain a strong German influence from their original settlers. Boerne is such a town, founded in 1849 by German colonists. This rich heritage is alive and well, and can be found in its annual festivals, food specialties, and restored historical structures. Most of the action takes place along the main street known as Hauptstrasse, where you can explore antique shops, wine bars, and eateries.
