Fuel Your Hunger in Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is booming with visitors eager to hike, bike, and enjoy the waters of the largest alpine lake in North America. All that activity time is sure to build up an appetite. While staying at Northstar Lodge or One Village Place, check out a few of the restaurants on this list of area eateries.*

Breakfast and Brunch

The original Squeeze In is a longtime favorite in Truckee, where both properties within Hyatt Vacation Club are located. The dining room is a cozy collection of mismatched decor and furniture with an eclectic breakfast menu. Go with the signature Racy Tracy omelet (folded over gently with mushrooms, cheese, and avocado) and a mimosa.

The Fire Sign Cafe has been a staple of the Tahoe City dining scene since 1978. Come by for breakfast and try the challah bread French toast, buckwheat pancakes, or the smoked salmon eggs Benedict. The restaurant, renovated from a private home, has a cozy feel with spacious backyard seating. Don’t worry if you wake up late; breakfast is available all day.

Ernie’s Coffee Shop is about an hour away in South Lake Tahoe and dates back to 1968, attracting customers over the years for its wide variety of breakfast and lunch plates. All-day breakfast includes a whole category of Mexican-inspired dishes, while the lunch menu features specialty burgers and a big selection of cold and hot sandwiches. The coffee is an exclusive roast from locally based Alpen Sierra Coffee Roasting Company.

Lunch/Quick Bites

The Rubicon Pizza Company serves up vibrant flavors for those seeking pizza and pasta. And it’s just a short walk from both properties in the Village at Northstar. Enjoy a traditional Margherita or the indulgent Big Mountain pie with four different meat toppings. The restaurant makes a point to use regional, organic ingredients whenever possible. (The operators also run Base Camp Pizza Company in South Lake Tahoe.)

Craving seafood? The Oyster Bar is one of the few raw seafood bars in the Stateline/South Lake Tahoe area. The intimate counter wraps around an open kitchen serving oysters, shrimp, mussels, clams, and cooked dishes like jambalaya and a variety of pan roasts. The Oyster Bar also offers a choice between New England–style or Manhattan-style clam chowder. Seating is first-come, first-served.

Dinner

Petra in Northstar Village offers a deep selection of sommelier-chosen wines available for purchase or to enjoy in-house with a small but exceptional food menu. Dishes are often inspired by Mediterranean culture, especially the Fattoush salad, hummus, and spanakopita (spinach pastry). For something heartier, there are steaks, seafood, and a Moroccan vegetable stew.

Lone Eagle Grille in Incline Village combines spectacular lakeside views with a menu of robust steaks. This includes prime New York Strip, Angus filet, and bison tenderloin. Seafood lovers may prefer the pan-seared Chilean sea bass. The rustic but elegant atmosphere matches up well with a choice of cocktails or an extensive wine list with picks from Europe and California.

Kalani’s has been a local favorite in South Lake Tahoe since it opened in 2004, combining a unique mix of Hawaiian and Asian recipes in a tasteful island-themed environment. The sushi rolls and sashimi are among the best around, using fresh fish flown in directly from Hawai‘i. Come early for happy hour in the Puka Lounge Monday to Friday, from 5 to 6 PM.

Temecula, also known as Southern California’s wine country, is a gem hiding in plain sight. It’s about a 20-mile trip from The Welk to explore the 40+ wineries dotting the terrain. There’s also a charming old town filled with boutique shops and appealing dining spots — all without the crowds of Northern California’s grape regions.
