You’re close to an exciting, unique multi-media creative world when you stay at Sirena del Mar*.
Nearby, Viva La Plaza showcases local art, music, and food on Friday nights. And enjoy screenings at November’s annual International Film Festival Cabo.
The best part? You don’t need a special event to experience the area’s creative inspiration. It’s an essential part of the country’s heritage and embedded in its roots.
Mexico exudes color and creativity, from fabrics and pottery to paintings and sculptures. Art has been coming out of the Baja California peninsula since the dawn of humanity. The oldest cave paintings in the Americas are in the mountains north of Los Cabos.
Today, the region is home to an impressive community of local and international artists. Take a break from the pool on your next visit and dip your toes into Baja's vibrant art culture.
Gallery Goods
To explore the local gallery scene, head to San José del Cabo, the colonial sister city about 20 miles from Cabo San Lucas. Browse everything from traditional fine art to indigenous-inspired craft items as you meander down charming cobblestone streets. The artists are often on hand to chat about their inspiration and process, and international shipping is readily available for those extra-special souvenirs.
Although you can gallery hop any day of the week, experiencing San José on a Thursday evening is a must. From November through June, its Gallery District comes alive on Thursdays from 5 to 9 PM for the San José del Cabo Art Walk.
Nibble and sip on tapas and wine while enjoying live entertainment and engaging art. The galleries are open late and many premiere new exhibitions. Toward the end of the Art Walk, the crowds migrate over to the district's top restaurants, including Don Sánchez Restaurant, Agave Kitchen, and Sage. So book ahead if you plan to stay for dinner.
Magical Town
About 50 miles north of Cabo San Lucas is Todos Santos, one of Mexico’s Pueblo Mágicos (magical towns). This seaside artists' community makes a fantastic day trip — you can easily spend hours browsing art galleries and one-of-a-kind boutiques.
End your day at El Mirador Oceanview Restaurant, known for its "Mexiterranean" cuisine, stunning ocean views, colorful sunsets, and bright stars.
Festival Time
To dive even deeper into Cabo's art scene, visit during March or April for Art Baja California (ABC). Launched in 2023, this festival features exhibits and programming throughout San José del Cabo, Todos Santos, and the nearby city of La Paz. A collaboration with ZONAMACO, the largest art fair in Latin America, ABC gives local artists a platform to comment on their culture. For example, one installation by Mexican artist Ana Teresa Fernández used 1,800 golden acrylic mirrors to represent how climate change is impacting indigenous languages.
