The third largest city in California, San Diego feels like perpetual summer. The weather is impeccable most of the year, with daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s and an average of 320 sunny days a year. Fittingly, San Diego is a place that takes leisure seriously.
The big question when you’re there: How will you fit it all into one visit? Here are a few highlights of where to go and what to do*:
Sample Some Beer and Wine
The beer scene in San Diego consistently ranks in the top five in the U.S. for two reasons: the amount of craft beer brewed and the number of breweries. Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Escondido is one of the biggest names in the SoCal scene. AleSmith Brewing Company is known for its Speedway stouts, which incorporate flavors like cherry and salted caramel brownie. And for those who prefer fruit to beer, Serpentine Cider at the Miralani Makers District creates several versions based on apples, apricots, guava, and other flavors; it also shares a space with grill favorite Smokin J's BBQ.
Wine lovers will find plenty to savor, too. Temecula Valley, located about 20 miles north of Hyatt Vacation Club at The Welk, is home to nearly 50 wineries that use the dry, sunny climate to produce their many varietals. The non-drinkers in your group can also enjoy pit stops at the area's olive oil producers, many of which have tasting rooms.
Go to the San Diego Zoo
In 2023, the iconic San Diego Zoo marked its 100th anniversary in its current location. It’s one of the world's great animal parks, with so many varied exhibits and unmatched conservation efforts. Start with a ride on the SkyFari. The tram glides above the park, giving you an aerial view of the animals and the surrounding Balboa Park neighborhood. If your party has kids (or adults!) who love newborn animals, the Wildlife Baby Boom walking tour is a great add-on that includes early entry to the zoo. And the regular exhibits — from aviaries to the Africa Rocks section to the Elephant Odyssey — never fail to delight.
Visit the Gaslamp Quarter
Blocks of downtown San Diego that date to the Victorian Era have been reborn as the Gaslamp Quarter. It’s the city’s epicenter for entertainment, arts, and culture. Think rooftop bars, restaurants helmed by award-winning chefs, and a nightlife scene that draws in the locals. Stop by a comedy club, catch a Major League Baseball game, or hang out at the Cat Café, where you can enjoy a stellar cup of coffee and interact with the cats on-site.
Swim and Snorkel
There are more than 70 miles of beaches in San Diego County — and enough diversity between them to make everyone happy. The sand in Encinitas is a local favorite for a laid-back atmosphere. Moonlight State Beach, with its playground, fire pits, and easy parking, is a highlight. Mission Beach Park is a hit with families, thanks in part to the rides and amusements of neighboring Belmont Park. La Jolla, meanwhile, offers a little bit of everything. Swimmers love La Jolla Shores. The Cove is a favorite for snorkeling. And the children's pool is known for seal and sea lion watching. Be sure to find your way to Sunset Cliffs Natural Park to capture one of those iconic San Diego sunsets for your social media feed.
